Who is Ansi?

Ansi serves as the Black Community Resource Centre’s symbolic “mascot,” embodying creativity, resilience, and the power of storytelling.

During the first phase of our animation project, our participating youth drew inspiration from Anansi, the clever and charismatic trickster rooted in the oral traditions of West Africa, particularly among the Akan people of present-day Ghana, to bring to life our own Ansi. Through generations, Anansi’s stories journeyed across the Atlantic and became an integral part of Caribbean folklore, carried and preserved through the lived experiences of the transatlantic slave trade.

By shaping our character around Anansi, the youth not only engaged with a rich cultural legacy but also reimagined it through their own voices, highlighting wit, adaptability, and the enduring strength found in community and shared stories.
