Lectures Logos Readings & Kola Magazine
Project: Building Bridges Via Literature
LECTURES LOGOS READINGS, as the bilingual name implies, is an English-French reading series that is held monthly. It is co-hosted by H. Nigel Thomas and Maguy Métellus. Its principal objectives are: getting writers from Montreal minority communities to share their work with the majority community, building community links via literature, and providing a sharing space for literary artists. Logos’ readers include established and beginning writers, and there is almost always a complementary open mic session.
KOLA MAGAZINE was founded in 1987 by four Black Montreal writers, who called themselves the Black Writers’ Guild. Its purpose was to provide an outlet for the literary creativity of Blacks, whose work at the time was rarely accepted by Euro-Canadian journals. The Guild accepted work from everyone of every race provided their work was relevant to the Black experience. Since 2017 the magazine has adopted a more multicultural stance.
