In The Know
During the 2014-15 school-year, BCRC offered “In The Know,” a series of legal workshops designed to familiarize youth with their legal rights and responsibilities. Over fifty free workshops took place in various English high-schools throughout the Greater Montreal area. Then, in collaboration with local community centers and interested groups we also offered legal education sessions so that their parents and others in the community could also be “In The Know.”
Know Your Rights Workshops
According to published statistics, Canada has the highest rate of juvenile incarceration among industrial countries. With this fact in mind, BCRC has found that many youth remain unaware of their legal rights and responsibilities. The workshops offered in the 2014-2015 school year covered topics that many teens should be “In the Know” about. They are: Under Arrest, Technology and Recreation, Crime, Drugs, Moving Around and the STM, In Your Home, In the Workforce, School Safety, and Sexual Misconduct.
BCRC’s animator, Svens Telemaque is a active member within the Montreal community. He came to us with a diverse skill-set and passion to educate today’s youth. The project’s success was definitely due to his ability to engage high-school youth and to open dialogue with them in a frank, yet stimulating manner.
